The Royal Air Force (RAF) is the air and space force of the United Kingdom, British Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies. It was formed towards the end of the First World War on 1 April 1918, becoming the second independent air force in the world after Finnish Air Force (established 6 March 1918), by merging the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS).

In British service the aircraft is known only as F-35B Lightning, losing its ‘II’ (it is actually the RAF’s third Lightning, after the Lockheed P-38 and English Electric Lightning).
