Masaccio was born in 1401 in a small town outside of Florence called Castel San Giovanni de Altura (known today as San Giovanni Valdarno). His father died when he was five years old and shortly after his brother was born and he too became a painter. Much of Masaccio's life is unknown or given up to arbitrary dates.
