Vaporwave’s sound can be characterized as a combination of elevator music, mall music, and in store shopping music. Vaporwave often employs pitch shifting, looping, and the use of reverb.
My tip is to think outside of the box, use stuff other people wouldn't, chop up samples in an interesting way. With my stuff, ~/.Asuka, I don't sample anything; I use vintage video game soundfonts to make vaporwave-esque music. The biggest thing is to try to be original, don't just slow stuff down and add reverb.
Vaporwave has always existed as a critique of consumerism. Much of it both in its origins and today consists of chopped and screwed corporate jingles, elevator music, News channel smooth Jazz, that sort of thing.
