Nagako became Japan's longest living empress dowager when she turned 92 in 1995, surpassing Empress Kanshi, who died in 1127. By then, Nagako had not been seen in public for years, living quietly in a modest home on the grounds of the Imperial Palace in Tokyo; her last official event was the 86th birthday celebration of Hirohito on April 29, 1987.
Nagako (6 March 1903 – 16 June 2000) was a member of the Imperial House of Japan, the wife of Emperor Shōwa (Hirohito) and the mother of Emperor Emeritus Akihito. Her posthumous name is Empress Kōjun ( 香淳皇后 ) .
