Nefertiti was the wife and queen of Pharaoh Akhenaten. They were members of the 18th Dynasty and ruled during the New Kingdom Period. Nefertiti was queen during a period of great financial wealth and religious upheaval.

The reign of Akhenaten and Nefertiti is characterised by a shift away from the traditional models, including a rejection of the national god Amun and the construction of a new capital dedicated to the Aten at Akhetaten.
In a shrine stela now in the Berlin Museum, Akhenaten and Nefertiti are seated facing one another with the Aten shining down above them. Akhenaten holds one of the couple’s daughters in his arms and kisses her on the lips, while Nefertiti sits with one of her daughters on her knee and the other perched on her shoulder reaching playfully for her mother’s earrings.
Ludwig Borchardt, who led the excavation at Tell el-Amarna, has often been cited with the succinct passage: “Description is useless, must be seen”.
Nefertiti was the principal wife of the pharaoh Amenhotep IV (later Akhenaten), and lived in the 14th century BC. Written records providing concrete historical facts about her origins, her marriage, her family life, political status and death are scarce.
