Jan 4, 2022 · The righteous Salome was the wife of Zebedee (Matthew 27:56), the mother of the disciples James and John, and a female follower of Jesus. This Salome was the one who came to Jesus with the request that her sons sit in places of honor in the kingdom (Matthew 20:20–21).
Supporting this possibility is that, in both passages, Jesus holds the sons responsible for the request, not their mother. Matthew introduced James and John as the sons of Zebedee the fisherman in Matthew 4:21–22. Jesus later gave the pair the name "Boanerges," which means "sons of thunder."

Jesus entrusts John with the care of his mother (John 19:26-27). Historians believe that Mary eventually died in Ephesus under the direct care of John. When informed of the apparent resurrection of Jesus by Mary Magdalene, John and Peter ran to the tomb. John outran Peter but did not go in until after Peter arrived.
