     There is an interesting, not directly obvious, application of the shortest path algorithms that is probably used quite often in algorithmic trading and financial sector that deals with trading assets and goods.

     Imagine that you could convert 1000 USD to 950 EUR and then 950 EUR to 1020 CAD which you convert back to 1007 USD :) Just by converting from currency to currency you can make money.

     This situation is called arbitrage opportunity. This can be done with any asset and between different markets.

     In this case, the relations between assets are modeled as directed edge-weighted graph and finding so called negative-cycles in the graph is in fact finding these arbitrage opportunities.

     Given a number of cities with highways connecting them, find the shortest path from New York to Chicago.

     The traffic and length of the highways are path weights.

     For example, change the word "cat" into the word "dog" by changing one letter at a time - "cat", "bat", "bag", "bog", "dog"

     The benefits of a pluggable system are

     • extensibility: the application can be dynamically extended to include new features.
     • parallel development: since features can be implemented as separate components, they can be developed in parallel by different teams.
     • clear development direction: since the plugin framework ideally provides a well-defined interface and documentation for plugin writers, developers have a clear roadmap for development.
     • simplicity: a plugin typically has one function, and so developers have a single focus

     But some of these strengths are also weaknesses:

     • extensibility: does the plugin interface anticipate the ways plugin writers what to extend the app, or does it restrict extension. Designing extensibility to meet all use cases often takes several iterations, or extremely good requirements analysis.
     • maintainability: the provider of the plugin framework not only has to make sure the plugin interface satisfies indented use cases, is clear and well documented, but also that it can evolve. Managing versions and backwards compatibility with existing plugins can be very hard. Hard enough that many practical implementations don't bother, and push the onus on plugin writers to update their plugins with each version.
     • complexity: although each plugin works when tested alone, interactions between plugins can cause new problems, with bugs appearing only with certain combinations of plugins.
     • testing: testing plugins can be difficult if the plugin system does not provide some form of mock plugin runner for testing, which is sometimes not possible, and testing is only available by running the plugin for real, which slows down development.
     • artifical separation: a plugin typically has a single focus, but what constitues a single focus is set by the plugin api provider. If a plugin writer finds he needs a plugin that can reasonably do 2 things (as defined by the plugin api) in close tandem, he may end up having to implement two plugins and find ways of providing communication between them that is not presently provided by the api. He's then having to work around or against the plugin framework.

     Designing a good plugin environment has many of the same challenges as designing a good library. If you are producing both the environment and the plugins yourself, then it's not so bad since you can update all the plugins as the environment evolves, but if the plugin api is open to all, then it requires careful planning and execution to get the design right to avoid too many plugin rewrites as the environment evolves.

     "Second-system syndrome" described by Fred Brooks advocates that the second system developed is often excessively generic, aiming for ultimate flexibility, sometimes producing a "platform within a platform"/"inner platform effect". A pluggable design is often seen as a way out when requirements are non-existent or underspecified. To compensate, the software is made as flexible as possible to try to handle "whatever comes along".

     Appologies if this paints a dreary picture - pluggable systems can be fantastic and offer a lot of strengths, but they come at a high price. Before diving into a pluggable system, it's prudent to draw up requirements for all the plugins that you will need to cover the functionality required. This will then help you decide if the pluggable design is worth the effort, or some simpler approach would serve equally well.

     The question is generally not about the amount of bandwith it might save. It is more about lowering the number of HTTP requests needed to render a webpage.

     Considering :

     • web browsers only do a few HTTP requests in parallel
     • doing an HTTP request means a round-trip to the server, which takes lots of time
     • we have "fast" internet connection, which means we download fast...

     What takes time, when doing lots of requests to get small contents (like images, icons, and the like) is the multiple round-trips to the server : you end up spending time waiting for the request to go, and the server to respond, instead of using this time to download data.

     If we can minimize the number of requests, we minimize the number of trips to the server, and use our hight-speed connection better (we download a bigger file, instead of waiting for many smaller ones).

     That's why CSS sprites are used.

     To squabble about the performance of binary-trees is meaningless - they are not a data structure, but a family of data structures, all with different performance characteristics. While it is true that unbalanced binary trees perform much worse than self-balancing binary trees for searching, there are many binary trees (such as binary tries) for which "balancing" has no meaning.

     Applications of binary trees

     • Binary Search Tree - Used in many search applications where data is constantly entering/leaving, such as the map and set objects in many languages' libraries.
     • Binary Space Partition - Used in almost every 3D video game to determine what objects need to be rendered.
     • Binary Tries - Used in almost every high-bandwidth router for storing router-tables.
     • Hash Trees - Used in torrents and specialized image-signatures in which a hash needs to be verified, but the whole file is not available. Also used in blockchains for eg. Bitcoin.
     • Heaps - Used in implementing efficient priority-queues, which in turn are used for scheduling processes in many operating systems, Quality-of-Service in routers, and A* (path-finding algorithm used in AI applications, including robotics and video games). Also used in heap-sort.
     • Huffman Coding Tree (Chip Uni) - Used in compression algorithms, such as those used by the .jpeg and .mp3 file-formats.
     • GGM Trees - Used in cryptographic applications to generate a tree of pseudo-random numbers.
     • Syntax Tree - Constructed by compilers and (implicitly) calculators to parse expressions.
     • Treap - Randomized data structure used in wireless networking and memory allocation.
     • T-tree - Though most databases use some form of B-tree to store data on the drive, databases which keep all (most) their data in memory often use T-trees to do so.

     The reason that binary trees are used more often than n-ary trees for searching is that n-ary trees are more complex, but usually provide no real speed advantage.

     In a (balanced) binary tree with m nodes, moving from one level to the next requires one comparison, and there are log_2(m) levels, for a total of log_2(m) comparisons.

     In contrast, an n-ary tree will require log_2(n) comparisons (using a binary search) to move to the next level. Since there are log_n(m) total levels, the search will require log_2(n)*log_n(m) = log_2(m) comparisons total. So, though n-ary trees are more complex, they provide no advantage in terms of total comparisons necessary.

     (However, n-ary trees are still useful in niche-situations. The examples that come immediately to mind are quad-trees and other space-partitioning trees, where divisioning space using only two nodes per level would make the logic unnecessarily complex; and B-trees used in many databases, where the limiting factor is not how many comparisons are done at each level but how many nodes can be loaded from the hard-drive at once)
