Whitney Plantation (legal name The Whitney Institute) is a non-profit museum dedicated to the history of the Whitney Plantation, which operated from 1752-1975 and produced indigo, sugar, and rice as its principal cash crops.

Whitney Plantation opened its doors on December 7, 2014 to a crowd of over 750 people, both local and international. Since its opening, the museum has welcomed over 500,000 people from around the world.
The plantation was a 1,800-acre property. Today, 200 acres are occupied by the museum which opened to the public for the first time in December 2014. (The remaining acreage was sold off by the previous owners in the 1970s.)
