May 1, 2024 · In 1951, J. Bacon and Sons built a $1 million free-standing department store on Shelbyville Rd. as their first major venture outside of downtown. Bacon’s was the first large suburban department store in the area, and they had to upgrade their merchandise to appeal to the East End suburban shopper.
