He was born August 8, 1965 in Hackensack, New Jersey. Keats attended Gill St. Bernard's School. He began his career assisting photographers Larry Clark, Arthur Tress and Rosalind Solomon, and now lectures, teachesand is widely exhibited. His father was actor Steven Keats and Thatcher has also studied acting.
Thatcher Keats attended Hampshire College in 1982, alongside classmates Ken Burns, Charlie Clouser, and John Bechdel. Keats acted in the 1975 film Hester Street and 1980's American Success Company alongside his father Steven Keats. In 1985 he played Danny in Henry Jaglom's Always. He also appeared in the film 16W by photographer Gerald Slota in 2004 and studied with Austin Pendleton for several years in the early 2000s.[citation needed]
