Coming Home Was a Mistake is the fifth episode of the eighth season of The Vampire Diaries and the one hundred and sixtieth episode of the series overall.

WHEN TRAGEDY STRIKES TOO CLOSE TO HOME — Spiraling down a dangerous path of self-destruction, Damon's latest actions prove he may be beyond the point of return. Unwilling to give up on his brother, Stefan is forced to make a gut-wrenching decision that threatens to change their relationship forever. Elsewhere, Bonnie gets advice from Caroline on ho...

Matt brings Tyler's body to Mystic Falls and informs everyone of his death. Seline volunteers to babysit the twins while everyone's at the funeral.

Alaric leaves his twins with Seline who volunteered to do it while he's at the funeral. Before leaving, he also asks Dorian to test the tuning fork every hour. It's a torture for Sybil because the sound will be heard over the intercom. Alaric also tasks him with finding what happened to Georgie. Matt, Alaric, Stefan and Caroline go to the funeral and see four already dug out holes. Damon reveals that he plans on killing the four of them. He makes threats, but leaves.

Bonnie's still with Enzo at his cabin. He asks her to untie him, which she eventually does. The moment he's free, he tries to run outside, but he's unable to do so. Bonnie used a magical object called "flame of imprisonment" from the Armory which keeps supernatural beings from going out. Over the phone, Bonnie tells Caroline that she has tried everything to help Enzo turn his humanity back on, but nothing worked. Caroline tells her that what worked for her was confronting her biggest fears.

Meanwhile, the gang hatches up a plan to put down Damon for a while. Damon visits Sybil in her cell to ask her about why is he still doing her bidding. She tells him that he's on his way of turning the humanity switch back on, but warns him that he'll feel regret for everything he's done and that his friends and Elena may never forgive him. She tells him that it would be better for him to keep his humanity off.

Dorian informs Alaric that Georgie's stuff are still in her room, so Alaric asks him to call the police to file a missing persons report. While Matt's going through Tyler's things, he finds a letter addressed to him. Tyler asked him to find Seline, a siren released in 1883.

Seline takes the twins to the carnival, explains them how death works and teaches them the fire spell. Stefan talks with Damon about how good it is to feel things. Stefan shoots a vervain dart at him, but Damon catches it, but Caroline shoots him with some more. They chain him and put him in a coffin.
