Her longtime partner is Edward Packard, creator of the Choose Your Own Adventure series of books. Compton herself wrote two books in the series: book #114, Daredevil Park (1991; with her son, Spencer Compton), and the "Younger Readers" entry #50, Stranded! (1989).

Although Sara is originally from Southern California, she moved to Texas in order to raise her children in a way she felt would best represent her husband.
