Born in San Francisco, California, he was the actor-manager of Ye Liberty Playhouse in Oakland, before he moved to Glendale, California, in 1918, to take up a career in motion pictures. He made his movie debut in The Pride of Redemption (1920) and went on to appear in nearly a 100 films.
