During his career, he was nominated for two BAFTA awards. Belmondo received several honorary awards – Palme d'Or at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, Golden Lion at the 2016 Venice Film Festival, and César in 2017. In 2009, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association gave him a career achievement award.
He was awarded the César (French Oscar) for Itinerary of a Spoiled Child (1988) but refused to take the trophy because César Baldaccini, the sculptor who designed the award named after him, had once expressed bad opinions about the work of his father, fellow sculptor Paul Belmondo.
