University of Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) was established in 1917, under the name Government Engineering College, by Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya. It is the 5th engineering college to be established in the country and 1st in Karnataka.
In 1917, the then Diwan of Mysore Sir M. Visvesvaraya felt a need to have an engineering college in the state, as the Civil Engineering College at Madras and College of Engineering at Poona were unable to accommodate enough students from the then Mysore State.
