In normal circumstances, the next legislative election would, therefore, have taken place no later than 11 October 2026. On 9 November 2023, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa announced he would dissolve the parliament and called an early election for 10 March 2024.
The elections were won by the center-right Democratic Alliance (AD) led by Luís Montenegro winning 28.8 percent of the votes and 80 seats, with the Socialist Party (PS) finishing in a close second with 28 percent and 78 seats, losing its absolute majority gained in the 2022 election.
