The Detective. "The Detective" contains a fine performance by Frank Sinatra, some very good scenes of police work, and not much else. It is a potentially excellent movie struggling to free itself from a heavy-handed script by Abby Mann and mediocre direction by Gordon Douglas.
In 1968, with The Detective, Sinatra made the transition complete, playing a gritty urban detective on the streets of New York, dealing with a murder and a suicide that end up taking him down the rabbit hole of corruption and conspiracy.
