Apache Natives are after Ellen (Bibi Andersson), her baby, and her husband, William (Dennis Weaver). The family crosses paths with Jess (James Garner), a man who is trying to find out who killed his own wife, a Native American woman. He begins to travel with the couple, but the trailing Apaches soon chase them all into a canyon. Jess is able to escape the situation and alert nearby soldiers.
