Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset. Edward was the eldest surviving son of Sir John Seymour of Wulfhall and Margery Wentworth. His career began solidly with posts in the households of Mary, the French Queen, the Emperor Charles, and the Duke of Richmond, but his real break came in 1536 when his sister, Jane, married Henry VIII.

The foundation of Somerset's career was that he was elder brother of Jane Seymour, Henry VIII's third wife, and therefore uncle to Edward VI. His progress was by no means spectacular until his sister's marriage in May 1536.
The first to swear allegiance to Edward were Somerset and Cranmer, followed by the other peers. Somerset appeared to be king in all but name, having two gilt maces carried before when he processed through Westminster or London, and even signing royal warrants on behalf of the king, although Edward was of sufficient age to do so himself.
