Born in Pont-d'Ain, he was the son of Philip (Filippo) the Landless, who until 1496 was a younger son of the ducal family of Savoy, and his first wife Marguerite of Bourbon.

Philibert married twice, first with Yolande Louise of Savoy (1496-1499); then with Margaret of Austria, daughter of Maximilian I and widow of Juan Prince of Asturias.
