The eighteenth season of Saturday Night Live began on September 26, 1992 and ended on May 15, 1993. The season is most remembered for its second episode, in which musical guest Sinead O'Connor tore up a photo of the pope during her second musical number, a stunt that got her banned from SNL.

Many changes happend before the start of the season. Long-term female cast member Victoria Jackson left the show after six seasons and newer cast members, Beth Cahill and Siobhan Fallon did not return from the previous season. Rob Schneider was upgraded to repertory status this season, and Melanie Hutsell was promoted to the middle cast group. Ellen Cleghorne, Tim Meadows, Adam Sandler and David Spade remained in the middle group.

Longtime cast member Dana Carvey left mid-season. This would also be the final season for Chris Rock and Robert Smigel. Smigel (who at the time, had been a writer since 1985) returned to the writer's room in Season 22.

This is the first season to not have any new featured players since Season 10, and the dirst one without a single new cast member since Season 15.
