The 47th season of Saturday Night Live premiered on October 2, 2021, with host Owen Wilson and musical guest Kacey Musgraves, and concluded on May 21, 2022, with host Natasha Lyonne and musical guest Japanese Breakfast.

Prior to the season, longtime cast member Beck Bennett departed after spending eight seasons on the show since 2013. Featured player Lauren Holt had both left the show at the end of the previous season. Despite Bennett and Holt's departures, the rest of the cast from the previous season was retained.

Three new featured players were added: comedic actor and filmmaker Aristotle Athari, impressionist and actor James Austin Johnson, and surrealist comedian Sarah Sherman. Sherman is now the second youngest female cast member and the sixth cast member in the current cast overall to be born in the 1990s, after former first year cast members Luke Null and Holt. Chloe Fineman and Bowen Yang, who had been with the cast since Season 45, were both promoted to repertory status, while Andrew Dismukes and Punkie Johnson, both of whom were hired for Season 46, remained as featured players.

While credited, Kate McKinnon did not appear in the first seven episodes of the season, as she was filming the Peacock drama streaming limited series Joe vs. Carole. She returned for the December 11, 2021 episode, hosted by Billie Eilish. Similarly, Cecily Strong missed from the January episodes of 2022, due to her starring in the Off-Broadway play The Search for Signs of Inteligent Life in the Universe. Pete Davidson was absent from the thirteenth episode until the twentieth episode due to filming the movie The Home.

Just before the start of the season, SNL lost four former cast members. Former cast member and Weekend Update anchor Norm MacDonald died on September 14, 2021, after a nine-year battle with leukemia. Two months later, former featured player Peter Aykroyd (the brother of Dan Aykroyd) died of sepsis on November 6, 2021. Late in the season, former cast member Gilbert Gottfried died after a long illness on April 12, 2022, and Dan Vitale died from heart disease on May 6, 2022.

In the leadup to the finale, Deadline and Variety reported it would be the final season for Aidy Bryant (who had been a cast member since 2012), Pete Davidson (a cast member since 2014), Kate McKinnon (a cast member since 2012), and Kyle Mooney (cast member since 2013). During the week of April 30, McKinnon's first episode (April 7, 2012) aired in the SNL Vintage timeslot. Michael Che had announced in late March that he would depart the Update desk at the end of the season, but ultimately decided to remain. He later stated that he'd changed his mind after producer Lorne Michaels had agreed to give him more time for side projects.
