Richard Parkes Bonington. (b Arnold, nr. Nottingham, 25 Oct. 1802; d London, 23 Sept. 1828). English painter, active mainly in France (his family settled in Calais for business reasons when he was 15). In 1818 he moved to Paris, where he studied with Gros and became a friend of Delacroix.
Bonington was born in Arnold, near Nottingham, on 25 October 1802, the only child of Richard Bonington and Eleanor Parks. Nothing is known of his schooling, but he is reputed to have been skilled at drawing from a young age and to have loved acting.
