Elisabeth (born Duchess Elisabeth Amalie Eugenie in Bavaria; 24 December 1837 – 10 September 1898), nicknamed Sisi or Sissi, [1] was Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary from her marriage to Emperor Franz Joseph I on 24 April 1854 until her assassination in 1898.

Elisabeth (born December 24, 1837, Munich, Bavaria [Germany]—died September 10, 1898, Geneva, Switzerland) was the empress consort of Austria from April 24, 1854, when she married Emperor Franz Joseph. She was also queen of Hungary (crowned June 8, 1867) after the Austro-Hungarian Ausgleich, or Compromise.

However, she came increasingly into conflict with the conventions and rules of the Viennese court, personified by her mother-in-law. Franz Joseph was torn between the wishes of his wife and the demands of his mother. Elisabeth withdrew more and more, and increasingly turned her back on both the Court and her husband.
In 1890 Marie Valerie married Archduke Franz Salvator (1866–1939), a distant relative from the Tuscan line of the Habsburg dynasty. The union resulted in ten children. The rapidly growing family resided at Schloss Wallsee in the west of Lower Austria.
