- Though a little confusing at times, this mystery, based on the Martin Cruz Smith bestseller, has some great twists and gives a harshly realistic picture of the average man's life behind the Iron Curtain. GORKY suffers from the miscasting of Marvin, an unrealistic romance and, most unfortunately, a plodding climax.

"Gorky Park" started fast and stayed on beat for most of the movie. From just about minute one we were knee deep in a triple homicide loosely tied to the KGB. Arkady Renko (William Hurt) was a militia officer investigating and was doing his level best to find the killer(s).
