Guido Reni, The Massacre of the Innocents. c. 1611: Reni's version of this theme seems to have been an important influence on Poussin. Reni's painting is typical of the Italian Baroque, infused with dynamic energy and movement, stark chiaroscuro, and impassioned, dramatic gestures and facial expressions.
