Jones confessed to a reporter in 1966 that he actually shot and killed Kahahawai. Massie’s mother, husband, and others involved with the murder of Kahahawai were caught by police trying to dispose of the body and led the police on a chase. Once caught, they were held on a U.S. Navy ship while awaiting trial.
