On February 12, 2020, it was announced via Variety, that a sequel was in development, for the live-action remake of Aladdin. Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, who produced the original, were confirmed to return, with Ryan Halprin, also acting as an executive producer. The film was also confirmed to be a theatrical release and not a Disney+ title.
On March 15, 2023, Mena Massoud said a sequel was very unlikely at the time.

Aladdin 2 was officially announced once the producers decided they had a good story and knew their path ahead. In January 2023, it was revealed that Smith was still set to return as the Genie in spite of the incident where he slapped Chris Rock at the Academy Awards event in 2022.
