It was first published in 1857 in Harper's New Monthly Magazine as "The Story of a Huguenot's Sword." This is a melodrama detailing the escape from France of Bartholomew and his young bride Susanne.

  7. Bartholomew Dupuy (ca.1652-1743) married Susanna Lavillon in 1685 and, as Huguenots, they fled from France to Switzerland and then to England, and in 1700 immigrated to Henrico (later Powhatan) County, Virginia. Descendants lived in Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Missouri and elsewhere.
