What are your Top 10 greatest Power Metal Bands? When I say greatest, I dont mean your favorite, I'm talking about the ones that have left a large impact and legacy on the genre. Nightwish are my favorite group of all times and i love power metal; yet i would hardly label them as such. They are symphonic metal to me, as much as groups like Xandria, Sirenia or Within Temptation.
Gloryhammer and all the bands that put more effort into cosplay and humor than music are the best representative of what the genre is today. But in terms of actual good music, Sacred Outcry and Unleash the Archers. Fellowship. UTA are good but they are not "pure" Power Metal.
Spot #5 could be filled by Stratovarius, Helloween, Edguy, Avantasia, Symphony X or Hammerfall. This all depends on the day/time/the trajectory of the sun and the moon. Can't really decide on absolute favorites, so here are my top 5 in no particular order: Heavenly and Fairyland and two of my favorites too.
