The first section of the paper examines theoretical and research perspectives in conceptualizing school organizational practices. The second section describes the roles, processes and opportunities that have been linked to students’ academic, social and emotional development.
These Eleven Principles include intentionally fostering moral and performance character through every phase of school life, developing a caring school community, creating an engaging academic curriculum, promoting shared school leadership, and involving families and the community as partners.
Here are four widely agreed upon components of a healthy school environment, why they matter, and how principals can improve them. Strong relationships are the foundation.
Start with a mutually agreed-upon, locally relevant, and research-based definition of school climate before beginning efforts to measure and/or improve it (p. 3). Use research-based, field-tested surveys to assess school climate, as part of a multi-method evaluation framework (p. 4).
