The Proposal is the first episode of Season 5 of Cheers, and thus the season premiere. This episode was written by Peter Casey & David Lee, and directed by James Burrows. It originally aired on the NBC network in the United States on September 25, 1986.
Sam proposes to Diane by phone. She wants him to make the marriage proposal worth remembering. Sam rents a boat and sets up the perfect romantic evening, only to have Diane reject the proposal. When she regrets that she rejected him, he rejects her.
•Kelsey Grammer was already a recurring cast member, but is now featured in the opening credits, instead of the closing credits. This remained in use until the end of the series in 1993.

Giving into her request, Sam tells her he will make a formal proposal to her the following evening. At work, Sam poll his regulars on what would be the best place for a proposal. The winning suggestion comes from Cliff, who suggests that Sam rent a sailboat, and make the proposal offshore.
