Franz Joseph (born August 18, 1830, Schloss Schönbrunn, near Vienna, Austria—died November 21, 1916, Schloss Schönbrunn) was the emperor of Austria (1848–1916) and king of Hungary (1867–1916), who divided his empire into the Dual Monarchy, in which Austria and Hungary coexisted as equal partners.
In 1890 Marie Valerie married Archduke Franz Salvator (1866–1939), a distant relative from the Tuscan line of the Habsburg dynasty. The union resulted in ten children. The rapidly growing family resided at Schloss Wallsee in the west of Lower Austria.
Franz Joseph was born on 18 August 1830 in the Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna (on the 65th anniversary of the death of Francis of Lorraine) as the eldest son of Archduke Franz Karl (the younger son of Francis I), and his wife Sophie, Princess of Bavaria.
Elisabeth (born Duchess Elisabeth Amalie Eugenie in Bavaria; 24 December 1837 – 10 September 1898), nicknamed Sisi or Sissi, was Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary from her marriage to Emperor Franz Joseph I on 24 April 1854 until her assassination in 1898.
Franz Joseph was torn between the wishes of his wife and the demands of his mother. Elisabeth withdrew more and more, and increasingly turned her back on both the Court and her husband. From the 1860s, the couple could no longer be said to have had a married life together.
The wedding took place in Vienna on 24 April 1854, the emperor’s young bride having been put through a ‘crash-course’ in preparation for her future role as empress. During the first few years of her marriage Elisabeth was overwhelmed by her position as empress.
