He popped up several times as a police officer in Dynasty (1981) and played four different characters in The Young Riders (1989) .

The on-screen chemistry that Gary Clarke and Doug McClure possessed reflected a good friendship off screen, and was loved by fans worldwide. Although he was with the show at the beginning, Clarke was being phased out of the show at the end of season two, but remained as a guest star for a few episodes in season three, before departing permanently.
In 1962, Clarke was cast in the role of Steve, a cowhand, on the Universal television series The Virginian, a role that occasionally gave him a chance to use his singing voice.
