The British Columbia Parks and Protected Areas System is a collection of physical properties managed by BC Parks. The system encompasses 1,035 park units covering an area of about 14.1 million hectares (54,440 mi 2 ) - about 14.4% of the entire province - with over 6,000 km (3,700 mi) of hiking trails and approximately 12,700 campsites.
The system includes 644 provincial parks, 2 recreation areas, 156 conservancies, 84 protected areas, and 148 ecological reserves. Four provincial parks are designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites, while 24 provincial parks are designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserves.
Although British Columbia occupies less than 10% of the country’s total area, it is home to 7 of the 48 national parks and reserves of Canada. National Parks and reserves account for 14.4% of British Columbia’s total land area.
Provincial Parks Are areas of exceptional natural beauty and/or cultural significance managed by the government of each province in Canada (e.g. provincial parks of Ontario, provincial parks of British Columbia). They are classed either a, b, or c, according to permitted uses and activities.
