206 N. Elmwood Street. The Victorian style John Smart house was built in 1886 by John Smart. He and his wife, Julia, and daughters, Anna and Maud, lived in the house until around 1900 when they moved to Cleveland. The house was then purchased by Orlo Jackson, cabinet maker, and his wife Adelaide Jackson who was a milliner.

The John Smart House, an elegant Victorian home, was built in 1886. The house features 11 rooms designed for the period and also offers special exhibits. It contains the Society’s holdings and resource materials.
Consisting of large bay windows, a two story tower, a first, and second story porch, an irregular roof line with scalloped shingles, and boards that define the different floor levels, it was evident that John had enough money and success to thrive in growing Medina County.

Mar 2, 2016 · He and his family lived in the house until the 1930's. The house became a rental home for awhile and then it housed the Medina Eagles. Around 1950, the home housed Medina County Government offices, primarily, the Board of Education. In 1985, the Medina County Historical Society took over the house. A special display will tell you about Dorothy Hart, a young girl who perished in the Cleveland Collinwood School fire in 1908 and her connection to Medina County.
