Oct 10, 2022 · Function. The temporal bone provides structural support for the skull, while protecting the cerebrum of the brain and surrounding membranes. In addition, this bone surrounds the middle and inner portions of the ear. Its lower portion connects with the mandible or jawbone to allow the mouth to open and close.
Temporal bone. The temporal bones are situated at the sides and base of the skull, and lateral to the temporal lobes of the cerebral cortex . The temporal bones are overlaid by the sides of the head known as the temples where four of the cranial bones fuse. Each temple is covered by a temporal muscle.
