Tommy Fairchild was a singer and musician in Southern Gospel for many years. He briefly sang baritone for the Florida Boys in 1957. He was also the pianist for the Oak Ridge Boys and the Blackwood Brothers.
As a result of more personnel changes, the group lost its tenor, so they lowered their arrangements and had Gatlin sing tenor, while the pianist, Tommy Fairchild, sang lead. They recorded an album for Cadence Records , then in 1958, they hired Willie Wynn to sing the tenor part, and Fairchild moved back exclusively to the piano.
After adding Roy's 13-year-old son, R.W. Blackwood (1921–1954), to sing baritone, the brothers began to travel and sing locally. By 1938, a fifth group member playing the piano was included in the lineup, though the name of the group was not adjusted as the group still sang as a quartet.
With the addition of tenor Willie Wynn, bass Herman Harper, and pianist Tommy Fairchild, they became one of the most popular quartets of the early 1960s. By this time, the group was known and marketed as the Oak Ridge Boys, so Fowler started a fourth group and again named it the Oak Ridge Quartet.
