The first published book of Bronx history: History of Bronx Borough, City of New York by Randall Comfort. European colonization of the Bronx began in 1639. The Bronx was originally part of Westchester County, but it was ceded to New York County in two major parts (West Bronx, 1874 and East Bronx, 1895) before it became Bronx County.

In 1914, Bronx County was split off from New York County so that each borough was then coterminous with a county. When the western part of Queens County was consolidated with New York City in 1898, that area became the Borough of Queens.
Though it's only been a part of Greater New Yorker (otherwise known as the five boroughs) since 1898, the Bronx has a much longer history than that—one that goes way further back than when Henry Hudson famously landed on New York's shores in the 17th century.

Oct 30, 2020 · At one point The Bronx was the most Jewish borough of New York City during the first half of the 20th century with up to 57% of the borough identifying as such and the majority were centered in and around the South Bronx. No other borough has ever reached anywhere near that percentage to this day.
All areas that had been annexed in 1895 and 1874 became the borough of The Bronx in 1898. Morris High School became the first public high school in The Bronx and was opened in 1897. By the turn of the century The Bronx was yielding to rapidly expanding urban neighborhoods and factories.
