Midway Atoll is part of a chain of volcanic islands, atolls, and seamounts extending from the Island of Hawaii up to the tip of the Aleutian Islands and known as the Hawaiian–Emperor seamount chain, between Pearl and Hermes Atoll and Kure Atoll in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands.

Jun 6, 2016 · What is raging now around Midway is a debate about how to protect Midway’s history and habitat. It was 74 years ago this week—June of 1942—that one of the major naval battles of World War II raged around the Midway Atoll, a chain of three small islands that are about 1,300 miles from Honolulu.
Midway Atoll (Kuaihelani) is a sanctuary for millions of seabirds, shorebirds, and various marine life who all call the island home. Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge and Battle of Midway National Memorial are currently closed to public visitation.
Midway is about 1250 miles from Honolulu and is not part of the State of Hawaii, it is a U.S. Possession claimed in 1903 by President Theodore Roosevelt. The entire atoll is 5 miles in diameter. Its two largest islands, Sand and Eastern Island, flank tiny Spit Island.
Midway Atoll comprises three coral islands and 580,000 acres of submerged reef and ocean at the far northern end of the Hawaiian archipelago. From left to right, the islands are Sand Island, tiny Spit Island and Eastern Island. They total about 1,549 acres.
