Space: Above and Beyond is an American science fiction television series that aired on Fox, created and written by Glen Morgan and James Wong. Planned for five seasons, it only ran for one season from 1995–1996 before being canceled due to low ratings.
Even if everyone somehow returned and survived, the plan was to introduce new characters anyway. In a chat held by the Sci-Fi Channel after the show’s cancellation, Wong and Morgan stated that McQueen would’ve returned to Earth and had to face his new disabilities.

As to why it failed - Space was simply way ahead of its time because ad-funded mainstream networks at the time did not have to compete with subscription-funded cable networks. So there was no way it could afford to promote an innovative product the way it needs to be to sustain it economically.
