- 2:51Israel may have violated laws of war in Gaza - UNReuters VideosSTORY: :: File Israeli forces may have repeatedly violated the laws of war and failed to distinguish between civilians and fighters in the Gaza conflict, according to the U.N. human rights office on Wednesday (June 19). :: Jabalia, Gaza :: Israeli army Separately, the head of a U.N. inquiry accused the Israeli military of carrying out the "extermination" of Palestinians. The U.N. rights office, or OHCHR, issued a report examining six Israeli attacks that caused many casualties and destroyed civilian infrastructure. This was its spokesperson, Jeremy Laurence. "It notes that unlawful targeting when committed as part of a widespread or systematic attack against a civilian population in line with the state or organizational policy may also implicate the commission of crimes against humanity." ::Near Gaza City, Gaza Israel's permanent mission to the United Nations in Geneva characterized the analysis as "factually, legally, and methodologically flawed." It said the OHCHR had, "at best, a partial factual picture." Laurence said the attacks examined occurred before December but were part of a continued pattern, though it was getting harder to assess the situation on the ground as the war went on. In a separate meeting of the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva, the head of a U.N. Commission of Inquiry, Navi Pillay, said perpetrators of abuses in the conflict must be brought to account. ::Jabalia, Gaza She repeated findings from a report published last week that both Hamas militants and Israel have committed war crimes. But she said Israel alone was responsible for the most serious abuses under international law known as "crimes against humanity." "We conclude that Israeli authorities are responsible for war crimes, crimes against humanity and violations of international humanitarian and human rights law, including extermination, intentionally directing attacks against civilians and civilian objects, murder or wilful killing, using starvation as a method of war, forcible transfer, gender persecution targeting Palestinian men and boys, sexual and gender-based violence amounting to torture, and cruel or inhumane treatment.” Israel, which does not cooperate with the inquiry and alleges an anti-Israel bias, chose the mother of a hostage held by Hamas to speak on its behalf at the meeting. MEIRAV LESHEM GONEN: “The international community must not allow political consideration to override our core human values." ::Tel Aviv, Israel And it criticized the report on the grounds that it did not give due attention to the hostages taken by Hamas in its attack on southern Israel on October 7.1 day ago
- 1:20Europe must host Gaza children - Greek foreign ministerReuters VideosSTORY: :: Europe must host children harmed by the war in Gaza, Greece's foreign minister says :: Athens, Greece :: June 18, 2024 :: George Gerapetritis, Greek Foreign Minister “We we have offered ourselves to host injured people from Palestine but also children from Palestine to come to Europe and stay here until the war is over.” “A few days ago I talked to the Palestinian prime minister and we had a very extensive and constructive talk about how to be of meaningful assistance especially for the humanitarian aid but also for the day after for the reconstruction in Gaza. Also yesterday I talked to the Israeli foreign minister in order to see how Greece could promote the peace formula.” “There is a total lack of basic resources of fundamental networks which are absolutely essential in order for people to be able to live under humane conditions so we need to start working on, first, providing housing for people, secondly providing essential networks including electricity and water and food and then to be able to provide some adequate security.” Gerapetritis is seeking partners in what he hopes would be a project to temporarily bring the children to the European Union, and said he discussed the idea with Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa this week. The 56-year old, who has held the post for a year, did not say how many people could be hosted by Greece or the EU but said the issue was under discussion with Palestinian authorities. Greece condemned the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas militants against Israel but has called for a halt to Israel's ground and air assault on Gaza that Palestinian authorities say has killed more than 35,000 people and flattened whole cities.1 day ago

- 3:49US wants to avoid 'greater war' at Lebanon-Israel borderReuters VideosSTORY: A top American diplomat on Tuesday said the United States is trying to avert a greater war along the border between Israel and Lebanon. "What (U.S.) President (Joe) Biden wants to do is to avoid a further escalation to a greater war. That is the effort here." U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein was in Beirut following an escalation in cross-border fire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah militants in Lebanon. Hochstein said he had been dispatched to Lebanon immediately following a brief trip to Israel because the situation was "serious." Iran-backed Hezbollah has been trading fire with Israel, in parallel with the Gaza war that broke out on Oct. 7. Last week, the group fired the largest volleys of rockets and drones in the last eight months after an Israeli strike killed a high-ranking militant commander. Hochstein has something of a track record in the region. In 2022 he helped negotiate the first ever Israel-Lebanese accord on a maritime boundary between the two countries. But Hezbollah says it will not halt its attacks on Israel unless there is a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Hochstein on Tuesday urged the Palestinian militant group Hamas to accept a U.S.-backed proposal for a truce. "A ceasefire in Gaza and/or an alternative diplomatic solution could also bring the conflict across the blue line to an end, creating conditions for displaced Lebanese civilians to go home in the south and for Israeli civilians to go home in their north." But a ceasefire in Gaza appears remote. The Israeli military on Tuesday released video showing what it said were its forces in Rafah, where it claimed it is trying to root out remaining Hamas brigades and recover hostages. The conflict erupted after Hamas militants stormed into Israel, killing 1,200 and taking more than 250 captives, according to Israeli tallies. Israel's devastating retaliation has killed more than 37,000 people in Gaza, according to Palestinian health ministry figures. Earlier this month, Israeli special forces staged a daring rescue that freed four hostages, who were taken by helicopter back to Israel. Israel's military on Tuesday released this video of one of the pilots in the operation describing his conversation with the newly freed Shlomi Ziv. "During the flight to the hospital I looked back and I saw Shlomi looking out of the window so I asked the crew chief that was beside him, if Shlomi wants to get in the cockpit and talk with us. So we let him in, we gave him earphones and we had a 10 minute conversation with an hostage that was just released from captivity." "Well yes, June 8, the day of the operation was my birthday, and I'm positive that it's the best present that I could get." But for Palestinians in Gaza, no such happy moments. At a hospital in Khan Younis, residents mourned those killed in an Israeli airstrike on a commercial street. Umm Mohammed Daloul is the aunt of one of the dead. "They are merchants, they have nothing to do with anything. They hit them with missiles. There is no safety, there is no safety…They are innocent people. They are honest people. They have nothing to do with anything. They are merchants. They killed the merchants, they killed people. They killed children. They killed women. They have mistreated us. God is our suffice and the best disposer of our affairs. I can’t say anything more than that.” Funerals were held in the Nuseirat refugee camp on Tuesday after airstrikes killed 17 people.2 days ago

- 1:19Netanyahu dissolved his war cabinet. How will that impact cease-fire efforts?Associated Press VideosIsraeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu disbanded his war cabinet, consolidating his influence over the Israel-Hamas war and likely diminishing the odds of a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip anytime soon. - 1:45Netanyahu disbands war cabinet, Israeli official saysReuters VideosSTORY: An Israeli official said on Monday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dissolved his six-member war cabinet. The widely expected move comes after centrist former general Benny Gantz left the emergency government. Netanyahu is now expected to hold consultations about the Gaza war with a small group of ministers, including Defence Minister Yoav Gallant and Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer who had been in the war cabinet. The forum was formed after Gantz joined Netanyahu in a national unity government at the start of the war in October. Gantz and another member of the war cabinet Gadi Eisenkot both left the government last week, over what they said was Netanyahu's failure to form a strategy for the Gaza war. The announcement comes as U.S. special envoy Amos Hochstein visited Jerusalem, seeking to calm the situation on the disputed northern border with Lebanon. Israel said tensions with the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia could lead to a larger conflict. Here’s Israeli army spokesperson Read Admiral Daniel Hagari: "Hezbollah's increasing aggression is bringing us to the brink of what could be a wider escalation, one that could have devastating consequences for Lebanon and the entire region. Hezbollah is jeopardizing the future of Lebanon so that it can be a shield for Hamas.” Hochstein's visit follows weeks of increasing exchanges of fire across the line between Israel and Lebanon, where Israeli forces have for months been engaged in a simmering conflict with Hezbollah that has continued alongside the war in Gaza.3 days ago

- 2:27Israel announces 'tactical pauses' in Gaza fightingReuters VideosSTORY: :: Beit Jann, Israel Mourners on Sunday buried Israeli military officer Wassem Mahmoud, the commander who was killed in the Gaza Strip along with seven of his soldiers on Saturday. At the funeral, an officer said Mahmoud led his soldiers "with bravery, determination and professionalism." Mahmoud was a member of Israel's Druze minority, a sect whose faith draws its roots from Islam. The Israeli military said Mahmoud and his squad were traveling inside an armored personnel carrier in a convoy of vehicles in the southern city of Rafah on Saturday. Here's army spokesperson Daniel Hagari: :: June 15, 2024 "According to the information we have, at this point a strong explosion occurred in one of the engineering vehicles in the convoy, apparently caused by an explosive device planted in the area or as a result of an anti-tank missile being fired. Inside the armored carrier were the eight fighters who were killed." The armed wing of the Hamas militant group said the vehicle had been trapped in a prepared minefield. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday called the casualties "another heartbreaking price in our just war for the defense of our homeland." And he pledged again to stick with his military objectives: the destruction of the Hamas militant group and the return of all Israeli hostages held in Gaza. :: Israel Police via X On Saturday, the Israeli police released this footage purporting to show parts of an operation last weekend that rescued 26-year-old Noa Argamani and three others who were taken captive on October 7. Reuters was not able to independently verify the date or the location the video was filmed. :: Jabalia Refugee Camp, Gaza :: October 14, 2023 Despite growing international pressure for a ceasefire, an agreement to halt the fighting still appears distant, more than eight months since the start of the war in the Palestinian enclave. :: Rafah, Gaza :: June 13, 2024 But Israel's military on Sunday said it would hold daily tactical pauses in combat operations along a main road in southern Gaza to allow more aid to flow into the area. :: October 7, 2023 The war erupted when Hamas fighters rampaged through southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,200 and taking more than 250 captives, according to Israeli tallies. :: Source: Israeli military Israel's retaliatory airstrikes and ground invasion have killed more than 37,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza health ministry. :: Jabalia, Gaza Israeli forces have been closing in on Rafah, where it claims brigades of Hamas fighters remain entrenched.4 days ago

The occupation has destroyed our houses, there’s no celebration, the joy is incomplete, we lost our beloved and a lot of people have been killed. I hope God will compensate us and wish for a blessed Eid al-Adha.” People sat on prayer mats that they placed among the rubble of surrounding destroyed buildings, while few children wore the traditional jalabiya on their way to prayers. - 0:37Israel's Netanyahu pledges to stick to war goalsReuters VideosSTORY: :: June 15, 2024 :: Tel Aviv, Israel :: Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli Prime Minister "Israeli citizens, today we paid another heartbreaking price in our just war for the defense of the homeland. In deep sorrow, in heavy mourning, I bow my head together with all the citizens of Israel and mourn the fall of our heroic warriors." "Despite the heavy and staggering cost, we must stick to the goals of the war: the destruction of Hamas' military and governmental capabilities, the return of all our hostages, ensuring that Gaza no longer poses a threat to Israel and the safe return of our residents to their homes - both in the north and in the south." The eight soldiers were killed in the southern Gaza Strip on Saturday, Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said in a televised news conference, as forces continued to push in and around the southern city of Rafah and strikes hit several areas of Gaza, killing at least 19 Palestinians. The deaths of the soldiers may complicate the political situation facing Netanyahu, a week after centrist former general Benny Gantz quit the government, accusing the PM of having no proper strategy for Gaza. The soldiers, all members of a combat engineering unit, were in an armored carrier that was hit by an explosion that detonated engineering materials being carried on the vehicle, apparently in contravention of standard practice, Hagari said. The armed wing of the Palestinian militant group Hamas said the vehicle had been trapped in a prepared minefield that set off the explosion.4 days ago

I think he made a mistake not being here. This whole process started a year ago with 14-15 national security advisers and here we are today with half of the U.N. and to leaders level in many cases from many countries." :: Buergenstock, Switzerland :: Mette Frederiksen, Prime Minister, Denmark "Well, you can only find a peaceful solution if you have two partners who seek the peace and who want the peace and, unfortunately, Russia and Putin, does not want the peace. Ukraine wants peace. And now we are almost 100 countries supporting a peaceful solution to this conflict. I think it's an important event. It's important for Ukraine. It's important for the entire world, because we need peace in Ukraine and at the same time we need Russia to respect, to accept democracy and Russia is not stronger than the European democracies." World leaders gathered at a Swiss mountain resort to try to build support for Ukraine's peace proposals at the conference skipped by U.S. President Joe Biden, shunned by China and dismissed as a waste of time by Moscow. More than 90 countries are taking part, but China's absence in particular has dimmed hopes the summit would show Russia as globally isolated, while recent military reverses have put Kyiv on the back foot. The war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas has also diverted the world's attention from Ukraine. The talks focus on broader concerns triggered by the war, such as food and nuclear security.5 days ago
- 0:44No festive feelings in Gaza ahead of Eid-al-AdhaReuters VideosSTORY: :: Those in Gaza’s devastated Nuseirat camp struggle to feel festive for Eid-al-Adha :: which marks the climax of the annual Haj pilgrimage :: Ismail Allian, Nuseirat resident "Today, more than five million Muslims. They are standing on Arafat, they are praying and worshiping God to forgive them. And we as Palestinians, we are victimized. We are exposed to genocide. What kind of Eid tomorrow will be al-Adha Eid? What kind of Eid we will face? This is a miserable Eid, we have been killed. Thousands of people have been killed here. Who will handle it? Who will help them? Who will compensate them?" Eid al-Adha marks the climax of the annual Haj pilgrimage, when Muslims slaughter animals to commemorate the willingness of Ibrahim, or Abraham, to sacrifice his son on God’s command, often distributing meat to the poor. The last Israeli strikes on the camp were carried out during the hostage rescue raid a week ago. 274 Palestinians were killed and 698 were injured, according to the Palestinian health ministry. Gazans do not feel the festive celebrations of Eid this year in the devastated strip, and according to the head of the World Health Organization (WHO), many people in Gaza were facing "catastrophic hunger and famine-like conditions". The war began when Hamas militants attacked Israel on Oct. 7, killing 1,200 people and abducting some 250 others, according to Israeli tallies. Israel's response has left more than 37,000 Palestinians dead, according to Gaza health officials, and reduced much of the Hamas-ruled territory to ruins.5 days ago
- 2:20Palestinian swimmer hopes to lift Gazans' spirits at OlympicsReuters VideosSTORY: Palestinian swimmer Yazan Al Bawwab has one goal: he wants to make a splash at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. "We, as Palestinian athletes, are here to raise the flag and show people that we are here, and even if we face difficulties, we will be here and represent the Palestinian people." The 2.3 million Palestinians living in Gaza have been enduring extremely dire conditions, since the war between Israel and Hamas broke out on October 7. Israel says Hamas killed some 1,200 people and took 250 hostages. Israel responded with air and artillery strikes that have killed more than 37,000 people and reduced much of the Gaza Strip to rubble. 24-year-old Bawwab was born in Saudi Arabia to Palestinian refugees. He is chasing a dream that is not his alone. "My father’s dream was to learn how to swim and become a swimmer, but he couldn't do that, he never got the chance. He was a refugee, he didn't even have food. Thank God his dream came true through his son. He is proud that I was able to reach the stage that he never could." His father, Rashad Al Bawwab, says the upcoming games in Paris are an opportunity to represent the Palestinian cause. "This is a huge opportunity for Yazan, for him at a personal level to be at the Olympics, because it's not easy for a person to reach this level. But what's more important is that he represents oppressed people, whose rights are repressed. So for him to be at the swimming pool, perhaps people will understand that Yazan represents these people, and that these people exists in Palestine."6 days ago

Israeli tanks advanced deeper into the western area of Rafah, amid one of the worst nights of bombardment from air, ground, and sea, forcing many families to flee their homes and tents under darkness, residents said on Thursday. The Israeli military denied in a statement it had launched any strikes inside the Al-Mawasi humanitarian zone.
