The Arenaviridae are unique amongst the negative strand viruses for their bi-segmented genome with ambisense coding strategy.
Arenaviridae is a family of ambisense RNA viruses with genomes of about 10.5 kb and five genera. The family includes viruses that infect fish, snakes, mammals, and unknown hosts, and some can cause diseases in humans and other primates.
Arenaviruses are thought to multiply like typical antisense RNA viruses (e.g. bunyaviruses). Pathogenesis. Infection is suspected to be caused by invasion through broken skin or the aerosol/respiratory route. The gross pathology caused by these diseases is unimpressive and is of little help in explicating the pathogenetic mechanism.

The Arenaviridae includes lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus, Lassa fever virus, Mopeia virus, Tacaribe virus, Junin virus, Lujo virus, and Machupo virus; all are transmitted by rodents and thus are not arboviruses. Lassa fever virus can be transmitted from person to person.
