History. Founded in 1932, Ligue 1 (formerly National and Division 1) is the top division of French football. It contains 20 teams. The season runs from August to May, and teams play each other both home and away to fulfil a total of 38 games. Ligue 1 has promotion and relegation linked to French Ligue 2, the second tier.
Being the top of the French football league system, it is the country's primary football competition. Administered by the Ligue de Football Professionnel , Ligue 1 is contested by 18 clubs (as of the 2023–24 season) and operates on a system of promotion and relegation from and to Ligue 2 .
Paris Saint-Germain have the most titles in French football, with 12, followed by Saint-Étienne and Marseille, with 10 each. The majority of Saint-Étienne's titles came during the 1960s and 1970s when the club was led by managers Jean Snella, Albert Batteux, and Robert Herbin.

France hosted the inaugural competition in 1960 and have appeared in eleven UEFA European Championship tournaments, tied for fourth-best. The team won their first title on home soil in 1984 and were led by Ballon d'Or winner Michel Platini .
