VS Gamera is the 35th episode of Death Battle, featuring Godzilla from the Godzilla series and Gamera from the Gamera series in a battle between iconic movie kaiju.

Wiz: Kaiju: the Japanese word for—

Boomstick: A giant monster that destroys everything around it! Like Godzilla, the King of the Monsters.

Wiz: And Gamera, the Guardian of the Universe. Despite being box office rivals for half a century, these two enormous creatures have never met... until today.

Boomstick: He's Wiz and I'm Boomstick.

Wiz: The year was 1954, less than a decade after Little Boy and Fat Man had decimated Japan.

Boomstick: The nuclear age had begun.

Wiz: As the United States tested their shiny new hydrogen bombs across the Pacific, one of them woke something up.

Boomstick: Godzilla, the radioactive rampaging savior/destroyer of Japan.

Wiz: Mutated by nuclear energy, Godzilla stands over 300 feet tall and weighs 90 thousand tons. He is an unstoppable force of nature.

Boomstick: And for some reason, Godzilla has made Japan his personal playground and has been stomping through it for 60 years.

Wiz: The year was 1965, the apex of the Space Race. Technology was advancing further and faster than ever before, but no one could've anticipated the bio-engineered marvel hidden beneath the waves.

Wiz: Eons ago, the ancient people of Atlantis learned how to construct life and foolishly decided to play God.

: But instead of creating something safe like a dog or a bunny, they created giant flying laser-shooting murder birds.

Boomstick: Surprise, surprise, they couldn't be controlled, and they turned 100% of Atlantis into ocean front property.

Wiz: So what was their solution to counter these giant destructive monsters? Why, ANOTHER giant destructive monster, of course!

Wiz: Enter Gamera, Guardian of the Universe and Friend to All Children.

Wiz: Alright, the combatants are set. Let's end this debate once and for all!

Boomstick: IT'S TIME FOR A DEATH BATTLEEE!!!

Boomstick: Add "Master of the Culinary Arts" to his title, 'cause Godzilla just made turtle soup!

Wiz: Gamera may have held the speed advantage, but Godzilla's sheer size and power won this bout.

Boomstick: He's nine times heavier! Plus, while Gamera tanked a city-busting nuke and almost died, Godzilla tanked a similar explosion from a meteorite and didn't even flinch.

Wiz: Gamera's shell was once pierced by Viras, a physically weaker foe. There's no doubt Godzilla could overpower this giant turtle.

Boomstick: Hell, he's strong enough to match goddamn Thor, and since Godzilla's Atomic Breath is composed of pure radiation, not fire, Gamera could not feed off of it.

Wiz: But most importantly, Gamera has a history of winning through retreating. He usually takes one round to analyze his foe and another to win the day. On paper, this sounds like a smart idea.

•The connections between Godzilla and Gamera are that they are both iconic reptilian kaiju who originated from black-and-white films. Both have the ability to breathe out a form of energy as their signature attack (Godzilla's Atomic Breath fires atomic radiation and Gamera breathes fire/plasma) and possess enough destructive power to threaten mankind, and, depending on the incarnation, chose to either use it against them or use it to defend them against other kaiju. Both are also prehistoric animals who laid dormant for a long period of time (Godzilla is a prehistoric sea monster who laid dormant underwater, while Gamera is a gigantic prehistoric tortoise who was frozen in ice) before being awakened by nuclear bombs due to American activity (Godzilla was awoken by American hydrogen bomb tests, while Gamera was freed from ice after an aircraft carrying an atomic bomb was shot down by an American jet fighter and exploded) and being exposed to its radiation, which gave them powers as a result. •Additionally, Gamera was heavily inspired by Godzilla, as he was created to rival Toho's Godzilla franchise, with his name having a similar suffix shared by other kaiju characters, such as Godzilla himself (Gojira) and Mothra (Mosura). •The two have a history of crossovers: •They officially had a crossover for the first time in the stage show Godzilla vs. Gamera at the 1970 Osaka World's Fair. •In 2002, Kadokawa approached Toho and offered to produce a crossover film between the two, but Toho had declined. •In the 2004 Tokusatsu show, Ultraman Max, the episode "Prophecy of Baradhi" features a group of kids briefly playing with a Godzilla and Gamera toy, comparing the two monsters. •Years after this episode released, Gamera would have a crossover event in the mobile game Godzilla Battle Line to promote GAMERA -Rebirth-. •This battle was intended to be uploaded shortly after the ScrewAttack Gaming Convention, but due to a hardware failure, the upload of the episode was delayed. •The city backdrop used in the fight was used earlier in Terminator VS RoboCop and would later be reused again in Deadpool VS Deathstroke. •Years after this episode's release, Therewolf Media would make a track for this matchup called "History Shows Again & Again" as part of his "What If?" commission tracks. •This makes it the fifth episode to receive its own commission track after its release, after Master Chief VS Doomguy, Dante VS Bayonetta, Kirby VS Majin Buu, and Yang VS Tifa. •This is the first one to be done by Therewolf Media. •The episode's thumbnails use uncredited fan art for both Godzilla and Gamera. •Both the original and current thumbnails use this piece of Godzilla fan art by Alex Alcanter, who has complained about this on Twitter years after the episode's release. His work can be found here. •The current thumbnail also uses this piece of Gamera fan art by Grimbro on DeviantArt. •This makes it the eighth episode where at least one of its thumbnails uses fan art, Zitz VS Leonardo, Kratos VS Spawn, Bomberman VS Dig Dug, Vegeta VS Shadow, Chun-Li VS Mai Shiranui, Ivy VS Orchid, and Fulgore VS Sektor, and with the next 13 being Deadpool VS Pinkie Pie, Lucario VS Renamon, Raven VS Twilight Sparkle, Leon Kennedy VS Frank West, Nightwing VS Daredevil, All Might VS Might Guy, Black Canary VS Sindel, Beerus VS Sailor Galaxia, Blake VS Mikasa, Steven Universe VS Star Butterfly, Sauron VS Lich King, Frieza VS Megatron, and Rick Sanchez VS The Doctor. •This is the second episode where said thumbnail uses fan art for both combatants instead of just one, after Ivy VS Orchid, and with the next one being Frieza VS Megatron.

    Easter Eggs

•Boomstick saying "Magnets... how do they even work?" in response to Godzilla's magnetic powers is a reference to the meme of the same name. •Nine years after this episode's release, Boomstick would make the same joke at the end of the post-analysis of Magneto VS Tetsuo. •Gamera's "Strengths & Feats" slide states that he "Blew up a Star Destroyer [No joke]" as one of his feats. This is a reference to Gamera: Super Monster, where Gamera destroyed the Zanon, which was represented with footage of a Star Destroyer from Star Wars. •Boomstick saying that Gamera "does machines" is a reference to another turtle, Donatello, and how it is stated that he "does machines."

    Errors

•Godzilla's "Strengths & Feats" slide states that he "Regenerated from a beating heart," referring to Godzilla's fate in Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, where he was reduced to a beating heart. However, that Godzilla was never shown regenerating from that heart and his true fate is never revealed. •In Gamera's "Abilities" slide, "Mana manipulation" is listed twice.
