If you're like me (old), you might have an interest in retro-computing. Personally, I spend a lot of my free time watching YouTube channels dedicated to old hardware and software, and many of those channel hosts' first introduction to computing was the Commodore 64. The Commodore 64, if you're unfamiliar, holds the Guinness world record for "highest-selling single computer model of all time."

I never owned one, sadly. I knew lots of people who did, and I was always envious of them and their weird little all-in-one computer with its tape-deck peripheral and chunky interface. Thankfully I can relive a past I never experienced with the new C64 reissue, a full-sized replica of the original Commodore 64 and its massive 64 kilobytes of RAM.

The C64 has been available in Europe since last December, and took almost a year to travel across the Atlantic to land on our shores this coming November. My guess is it was blown out to sea during a north Atlantic storm, and has been drifting the frigid waters ever since. But it's probably more along the lines of rights and distribution issues. I just like the idea of a wizened crew of old-timey sailors lashing down crates of valuable C64s to protect them from the wrath of Poseidon.

    The C64 releases November 5, 2020.

    $129.99

I should point out this is NOT the Commodore 64 Mini from a few years ago, this is a full-sized reissue of the classic home computer that looks and functions almost exactly like the original machine. It comes preloaded with 64 Commodore and VIC-20 games and includes a joystick. It's made by the same UK-based company, Retro Games Ltd., that made the Commodore 64 Mini and joystick, which is nice.

USB ports replace the old serial bus and proprietary I/O ports, which means you can load up your own games and programs. If you're so inclined, you can write your own programs in Commodore BASIC, just like the real thing. Here's a little example:

    10 PRINT "BUTT"

  2. The C64 Maxi is a full-sized replica of the classic home computer with a working keyboard, micro-switch joystick, and 64 built-in games. You can also add your own .D64 files and enjoy near perfect SID emulation and HDMI output.
