This is a list of characters from the science fiction television series Star Trek: The Next Generation. Characters are ordered alphabetically by family name, and only characters who played a significant recurring role in the series are listed.
The series was a follow-up to the original Star Trek series which was broadcast on NBC between 1966 and 1969, with characters from the original series appearing in The Next Generation on several occasions; a crossover movie titled Star Trek Generations was also released.

- John de Lancie as Q. Introduced in the pilot episode, "Encounter at Farpoint," the omnipotent being known as Q (John de Lancie) took an interest in Captain Picard and his Enterprise crew.
- Whoopi Goldberg as Guinan. As the bartender in the Enterprise's lounge, Ten Forward, Guinan (Whoopi Goldberg) would often provide a listening ear to the officers on the ship.
- Majel Barrett Roddenberry as Lwaxana Troi. The mother of Deanna Troi, Lwaxana (Majel Barrett Roddenberry) made several appearances over the course of the series, much to Captain Picard's chagrin.
- Denise Crosby as Lt. Tasha Yar. Though Tasha Yar (Denise Crosby) was only around for the first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation, she left a lasting impression on both the characters and the fans.
