Nihonbashi (日本橋 (にほんばし), also romanized as Nihombashi) is a business district of Chūō, Tokyo, Japan which grew up around the bridge of the same name which has linked two sides of the Nihonbashi River at this site since the 17th century. The first wooden bridge was completed in 1603.
Nihonbashi first emerged in the 17th century from the residential and commercial areas called "chonin-chi" that collected around Edo Castle. The Nihonbashi Bridge itself, an iconic symbol of the region, was first built in 1603, the same year that the Edo Period shogunate was established.
