Of the 45 units, at least 27 must be earned in courses outside Medill and at least 14 Medill courses. Journalism students must acquire significant professional experience to earn the BSJ. The requirement may be satisfied through a 4-unit Journalism Residency.
Medill undergraduates participate in a journalism residency for one quarter in their junior or senior year, during which they intern in a professional newsroom or media organization. Media outlets across the United States—and in some cases, overseas—have participated in this program.
Journalism Residency is a requirement for Medill undergraduates, who spend a quarter getting hands-on reporting experience with a partner news organization. (Northwestern’s academic year runs on three quarters – fall, winter and spring – instead of semesters.)
