Mother in Gaza longs for triplets in Jerusalem hospital
Reuters Videos20 hours agoSTORY: These triplets in Jerusalem are video calling with their mother, who is in Gaza. It’s the only way they can see each other. They haven’t been physically together since shortly after the girls’ birth in August 2023... when their mother, 26-year-old Hanan al-Bayouk, traveled from Gaza to Israeli-occupied East Jerusalem for a high-risk birth. Her triplets – Najwa, Nour and Najmah – were born prematurely and underweight, and had to stay in intensive care. Israel's restrictions on the movement of Palestinians meant al-Bayouk – in fear of falling foul of the law – returned to Gaza while her babies were still in intensive care. By the time they were ready to go home, war had broken out and she got stuck. Doctors and nurses call al-Bayouk via WhatsApp, but at times she is unable to get internet in Gaza. When they do get a hold of her, they repeat “Mama, mama” to encourage the girls to focus on her small image on the phone. Where al-Bayouk's triplets are being cared for is worlds away from conditions for children in Gaza, which has been blockaded and pounded by Israeli forces since Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7. The director of the neonatal intensive care department at Al-Makassed Hospital, Hatem Khammash, says the babies are doing well. “We are happy with their development, the only thing that makes us sad is that they are far away from their mother,” he says.

- 2:26Dozens killed in Israeli strikes on tent camp, says Gaza emergency serviceReuters VideosSTORY: Israeli airstrikes hit a tent camp for displaced Palestinians in southern Gaza on Tuesday - Killing or wounding dozens of people, the enclave's civil emergency service said. Missiles created craters at least 30 feet deep and set 20 tents ablaze inside the Al-Mawasi camp near Khan Younis according to the Gaza civil emergency service. It said that the 65 victims included women and children - without providing a breakdown of deaths and injuries. The Israeli military has called it a strike on a Hamas command center. Raed Muammar lost one of his daughters in the explosions which began in the middle of the night. "They were buried under the sand, the two daughters and their mother. I was under the sand as well. I got out and started looking for my daughters and my wife. I saw body parts of the neighbors in my tent - I did not know those were our neighbors' parts until I saw my family in one piece." Israel has designated the Al-Mawasi area a humanitarian safe zone for displaced Palestinians. The camp is crowded with families ordered by the Israeli military to flee there from elsewhere in the territory. Nearly all of Gaza's 2.3 million people have been forced from their homes at least once, and some have fled as many as 10 times. "Children became orphans... we became homeless. Where should we go? They said go to al-Mawasi, we went to al-Mawasi. They hit us, we were displaced many times. Where do we go?" The Israeli military said it "struck significant Hamas terrorists operating within a command and control center embedded inside the Humanitarian Area in Khan Younis." Hamas, the Islamist group that controlled Gaza before the conflict, denied allegations that gunmen were present in the targeted area, calling accusations it exploited civilian areas for military purposes "a clear lie to justify ugly crimes." The war was triggered on October 7 when Hamas attacked Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking about 250 hostages, according to Israeli tallies. Israel's subsequent assault on Gaza has killed more than 40,900 Palestinians, according to the enclave's health ministry. Both sides blame each other for a failure to reach a ceasefire that would end the fighting and see the release of hostages.1 week ago

Two regional intelligence sources said a major military research center for chemical arms had been hit several times. - 1:41Israel's military says gunman from Jordan killed three at borderReuters VideosSTORY: Video from Israel's ambulance service showed emergency vehicles at the Allenby Bridge border in the occupied West Bank on Sunday (September 8), after what the Israeli military said was a deadly shooting by a gunman who approached from Jordan. The military said three Israeli civilians were killed, after the attacker got out of a truck in the bridge area and shot at security forces there. They added that Israeli forces "eliminated" the gunman. The Israeli manager of the crossing said three workers were shot dead at close range. It's the first such attack along the border with Jordan since Palestinian Islamist group Hamas launched an assault on southern Israel on Oct. 7, sparking the latest war in Gaza that has ratcheted up tensions across the region. It took place in a commercial cargo area under Israeli control where Jordanian trucks offload cargo entering the West Bank, officials said. At a cabinet meeting, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu strongly condemned the shooting. "This is a difficult day. A loathsome terrorist murdered in cold blood three of our civilians at Allenby Bridge." Jordanian officials said the crossing was closed and that they had begun an investigation into the shooting. The assailant was a 39-year-old truck driver who came from an influential tribe in southern Jordan, according to family members. Israel and Jordan signed a peace treaty in 1994 and have close security ties. Dozens of trailers cross daily from Jordan, with goods from Jordan and the Gulf that supply both the West Bank and Israeli markets.1 week ago
